Auto Accident Glossary

A list of terms to help you understand your accident

Car Accident Terms

Having an auto accident glossary will help you understand all of the lingo that you will hear from your insurance company and the insurance company of any other involved parties. When you have been involved in a car accident, you may be scared and overwhelmed and then when you start hearing words that you aren’t all that familiar with, you may feel even more overwhelmed. Knowing some of the terms below will help you make sense of what is being told to you.

Basic Limits of Liability: This is the least amount of liability coverage that must be purchased.

Bodily Injury Liability: This is the legal liability for causing physical injury or death to another individual.

Claim: The assertion of a right to money or property.

Collision Insurance: This coverage will cover the loss to the insured person’s own automobile caused by it’s collision with another vehicle or object.

Comprehensive Coverage: This coverage will cover the damage to a vehicle that is caused by an event other than a collision or overturn such as fire, theft, vandalism and falling objects.

Deductible: This is the amount that you will have to pay before the insurance company pays the remainder of each covered loss.

Hit and Run: An accident caused by someone who did not stop to assist or provide the required and necessary information.

Personal Injury Protection: This is a coverage that provides benefits for medical expenses, loss of income from work, essential services, accidental death, funeral expenses and survivor benefits.

This is by no means an exhaustive auto accident glossary but it contains some of the most commonly used phrases and words when you are dealing with an insurance company. If you are not sure about what someone is saying in the aftermath of an auto accident, don’t be afraid to ask your insurance agents if they have an auto accident glossary or ask them for an explanation of what they are talking about and what it means for you. When you pay for your insurance, you are also paying for someone to explain all benefits to you when you need them most.
